The Thesis

Why solo founders matter, how we verify them, and what each mark on a founder card actually means.

The Bezos Index pairs hard verification with an interpretable scoring layer. Every founder in the register carries four visible marks — Vision, Boldness, Solo, and Bald & Bold — plus a composite Bezos Score that drives the leaderboard.

Conviction

Why we built this

01

Solo founders are the rarest signal.

Co-founder misalignment remains a common early-stage failure mode. Founders who raise $1M+ independently remove that risk from day one.

02

Conviction beats consensus.

Solo builders can move with clarity and speed. They make concentrated bets, iterate faster, and maintain consistent product direction.

03

Bezos was right, alone.

This index tracks that pattern globally: independent builders turning strong conviction into scalable companies.

Composite

The Bezos Score

How ranking works

(Vision + Boldness + Solo) ÷ 3

The primary register score is the simple average of Vision, Boldness, and Solo Confidence. Bald & Bold is shown for context and personality but deliberately excluded from rank calculations.

Using the example above: (8.0 + 8.0 + 10.0) ÷ 3 = 8.7 Bezos Score. That number is what sorts the leaderboard.

Ground truth first

Before any score applies, a founder must clear the inclusion bar: meaningful capital raised (typically $1M+), identifiable company and founder records, and evidence-backed solo status. Scores interpret signal on top of that verified foundation — they never replace it.

Vision · Boldness · Solo · Bald & Bold

Vision

8.0

Vision Craziness

What it measures

How audacious the founder's stated mission appears — the gap between what they claim to build and what seems conventionally achievable.

How we grade it

  • The Founder Vision Boldness Score field supplies a model-generated ambition signal for each founder.
  • The raw output includes a percentage score (0–100) and a written reasoning trace. We normalize that to a 1–10 scale.
  • The reasoning narrative appears on each founder card so you can read why a score landed where it did.
  • Higher scores reward founders who articulate transformative, category-defining missions rather than incremental improvements.

7–8
Category-stretching vision with clear conviction
9–10
Moonshot-level ambition backed by coherent narrative

Boldness

8.0

Boldness

What it measures

Public confidence and decisiveness signals — whether the company trajectory reads as growing, stable, or declining based on available growth intelligence.

How we grade it

  • We map the growth_insight_indicator field into a fixed boldness scale.
  • Growing companies score 8.0, stable companies 6.0, declining companies 4.0. When no signal is available, we default to 5.0.
  • This is a proxy for operational boldness: founders who are scaling visibly tend to score higher than those in flat or retreating phases.
  • Boldness feeds the composite Bezos Score alongside Vision and Solo.

Solo

10.0

Solo Confidence

What it measures

Strength of solo-operator evidence — how confidently we can say this founder built and raised capital without a co-founder.

How we grade it

  • The Number of Founders field is the primary input. Exactly one founder yields 10.0; more than one yields 4.0; unknown yields 6.0.
  • A separate Verified Solo badge appears when LinkedIn-only founder verification passes or founder count confirms a single operator.
  • This is the core inclusion signal for the register: the index is built around founders who raised $1M+ while operating independently.
  • Solo Confidence is weighted equally with Vision and Boldness in the composite score.

Bald+Bold

4.0

Bald & Bold

What it measures

A tongue-in-cheek flavor metric inspired by the Jeff Bezos archetype — a playful blend of visual persona and founder confidence. It does not change leaderboard rank.

How we grade it

  • This score uses a lightweight heuristic from the Founder Gender (First Founder) field as a stand-in for the classic bald-and-bold founder persona.
  • Male founders map to 7.0, female founders to 5.0, and unknown gender to 4.0.
  • Bald & Bold is displayed on every founder card for color and personality, but it is excluded from the composite Bezos Score.
  • Think of it as editorial seasoning — fun to compare, not a ranking driver.

Live data

Scores are not hand-entered. The register maps source-backed data fields into normalized founder profiles and refreshes on a short cache cycle so updates surface within about a minute.

Key fields carry citation traces — you can inspect evidence sources on individual founder cards in the evidence cluster. When a field has a populated source payload, the score or verification decision behind it is auditable.
